If you haven't read this or seen the movie, there may be a few spoilers below (but not too many :-) ...
It took me FOREVER to finish reading Atonement! I had seen the movie
first, quite some time ago, and I bought the book because I loved the
movie so much. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is
about Briony Tallis, the main character, and how her naivety ended up
with innocent Robbie Turner going to jail for a crime he did not commit.
The second part is Robbie Turner's time in the war, because he had the
option of going to war instead of jail, and he chose war. And this was
the part of the book that dragged on for me. I was so anxious to read
about Briony's attempt to redeem herself for what she did, which is the
third part of the book. And I must say, I like the book's ending much
better than the movie's.
As for the movie, its so nice to look at, but then again I'm a sucker for English/British period movies. Keira Knightley (Cecilia Tallis) and James McAvoy (Robbie Turner) do an amazing job with the characters they play. And Saoirse Ronan also does a great job as 13 year old Briony Tallis. The cinematography is beautiful, but the story seems to happen too fast, but I guess that's always the case with books turned into movies. However, I do like that they kept Robbie's time in the war to a minimum, because as I mentioned , it dragged on in the book. After watching the movie for the second time, I feel like something was missing, just a bit more detail or an extra scene would have been great! I do feel that the movie was more focused on Robbie and Cecilia's relationship, which I didn't mind, but the book did a better job and telling Briony's story which is essential to the story all together. Anyway, I recommend both if you have the time!
More makeup looks coming soon, I swear!
